If Windows 11 says “Virus protection is off,” open Windows Security from Start and check the active antivirus provider. Do not assume protection is working simply because the warning appeared after an update.
Correction — September 29, 2026: An earlier version called this a confirmed harmless August 2026 bug and presented generic resets as reliable fixes. Check which antivirus is protecting your PC
Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection. Review the provider and recommended actions. Microsoft notes that Defender can turn off automatically when another antivirus app is installed and active. On a work-managed device, unavailable controls may require your IT administrator. If Microsoft Defender is your antivirus
- Review Virus & threat protection → Manage settings and the real-time protection status. Address unexpected disabled protection; do not simply dismiss the notification.

If Windows Update is also failing
